Recycling Recovery Surcharge

The Recycling Recovery Surcharge is applicable to document destruction services. This surcharge allows Stericycle to maintain acceptable operating margins in the face of recycling cost increases and/or processed recyclable decreases and varies based on commodity prices in the market.

Recycling Recovery Surcharge calculation methodology

The surcharge is based on a percentage of invoiced document destruction services and is applied to your invoice subtotal before taxes. The percentage varies based on a national average of recovered paper commodity prices and adjusts monthly per published rates from Fastmarket RISI’s Pulp & Paper Index. This surcharge appears on the invoice as a separate line item.

Effective March 1, 2023, the percentage will be determined using the following table:

To reference the rates that will be used through February 28th, 2023, please reference the previous table published in June 2022.

Fuel and Environmental Surcharge

Effective January 2008, Shred-it implemented a fuel surcharge that currently is adjusted monthly based on the U.S. National Average On-Highway Diesel Fuel Prices* from the U.S. Energy Information Administration within the U.S. Department of Energy.

Fuel and Environmental Surcharge calculation methodology*

Calculation of the fuel surcharge is based on two main factors, the invoice subtotal before taxes and the current price per gallon of fuel. Based on the price per gallon of fuel, a fuel surcharge percentage is applied to your invoice subtotal before taxes.

The percentage is determined using the following table:

...For every +/- $0.07 change in price per gallon of fuel, the fuel surcharge rate changes by 0.5% respectively.
* The Environmental Surcharge is calculated at 4% of the invoice sub-total and is in addition to the Fuel Surcharge.
*  Shred trucks used to render onsite destruction services consume significantly more fuel than trucks used for offsite services.

Calculation example:

If your invoice subtotal is $100, and the U.S. National Weekly Retail On-Highway Diesel Prices is $3.75 / U.S. gallon, the Offsite Fuel Surcharge would be 13.0% (15.0% for Onsite Service) based on the table above.

It is calculated as follows:
Invoice subtotal  $100.00
Fuel surcharge  $13.00 (13.0% * $100 = $13.00)
Envrionmental Surcharge $4.00 (4.0% * 100 = $4.00)
Subtotal before taxes  $117.00 + applicable taxes

Please note: Due to the timing of fuel surcharge calculations, there may be a small profit made by the company on the fuel surcharge.
